REBOL Technologies today announced the release of REBOL/Core 2.5.5, the kernel of the REBOL distributed computing and advanced programming language software. This marks the first official release REBOL/Core since the 2.5.0 version and also brings a new level of commitment and support to the Mac OS X platform, beginning with version 10.2 (Jaguar).
REBOL/Core 2.5.5 provides dozens of new features and fixes since its 2.5.0 predecessor. Improvements include useful new functions, special refinements, relaxed word evaluation, a new literal format for storing data, faster output conversion, better CGI and HTML support, and many important bug fixes. This release makes the REBOL/Core system more compatible with recent releases of REBOL/View, REBOL/Link, REBOL/SDK, and other products.
This release also amends the end user license agreement to allow the free use of REBOL/Core for commercial and educational purposes. Separate licensing for such end uses is no longer required.
"Many developers and consultants are discovering that REBOL/Core offers a much simpler and easier-to-maintain approach to network applications and distributed computing, even for tasks as common as CGI scripting", says REBOL founder, Carl Sassenrath. "We wanted to make it clear that we support the broad adoption of our software technology across the entire Internet."
The REBOL/Core 2.5.5 release also adds support for the Apple Macintosh OS X platform, allowing Mac users to take advantage of the power and simplicity of REBOL scripts and applications written for other platforms such as Windows and Linux. Other REBOL products, including View, Pro, SDK, and Command, and IOS, will follow for OS X later this year.
The new REBOL/Core 2.5.5 release can be downloaded at no charge, and includes all new setup instructions. See the change documentation for a list of improvements since 2.5.0. Release of 2.5.5 for older platforms will be evaluated on a per-request basis.
